Dear Potential GPC Student,

As the world grows smaller, and information multiplies, global and cross-cultural competencies become increasingly important for success.   Most Mason students already know this, because they have chosen a university that is highly diverse and places strong emphasis on internationalization.  Faculty are preparing syllabi that include the global aspects of course content; administrators are exploring ways of making study abroad accessible to all Mason students; and deans and admissions officers recruit international students from the far reaches of the globe.

You are attending a globalized University, so you want to make sure that you globalize your experience here.  The Global Proficiency Certificate (GPC) can reinforce and document your preparation to enter the global work force.  You can demonstrate through the required activities that you are ready to assume tasks and assignments that require a broad perspective and an understanding of the subtleties and complexities of culture.

In the increasingly competitive employment environment, the GPC is a credential that sets you apart as a high achiever, someone with the initiative and intellect to succeed.  And, in addition, the work you do to qualify for the GPC will be challenging and, we hope, engaging and fun.  You will work hard, yes; but you will meet others who share the value you place on becoming an internationalized citizen.  They will challenge your ideas and support your efforts.

We hope you will decide to undertake the requirements for the Global Proficiency Certificate, and we invite you to bring your own ideas, perspective, questions and impressions into the process.  Be open to the changes that occur as you learn about other cultures and begin to understand your own culture(s) from an intellectual perspective.  And let us know how we can intensify the challenge and make the GPC an even more valuable asset to Mason students.

With best regards,
